Programmes & Projects

Programmes are continuing areas of CoRE-Math activity that bring together related activities over time. Projects and collaborations include externally funded projects, institutional collaborations and other initiatives connected with CoRE-Math activities. Where relevant, external funding is shown with the individual project or collaboration.

Programmes

CoRE-Math Fellowships

CoRE-Math Fellowships support research visits by postgraduate students and researchers from CoRE-Math universities to Uppsala University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The fellowships provide opportunities to develop research collaborations with researchers at the two host universities and strengthen connections across the CoRE-Math network.

About the programme →

CoRE-Math Schools

Annual mathematics schools have been organised without interruption since 2004, in long-standing collaboration with ICTP. The schools bring together postgraduate students and researchers for intensive study of mathematical topics, with international lecturers and opportunities for research interaction and networking.

About the programme →

Industrial Mathematics

Industrial Mathematics connects mathematics with problems from industry and society through contact workshops, Modelling Weeks, Study Groups with Industry and follow-up research.

About the programme →

Mathematics Competitions

Mathematics Competitions connects and strengthens national and regional competition activities across the CoRE-Math network, supports cooperation and capacity development, and encourages young people to continue their studies in mathematics and related disciplines.

About the programme →

Women in Math

Women in Math is a cross-cutting area of work within CoRE-Math, aiming to increase participation and opportunities for women in the mathematical sciences and strengthen inclusion across CoRE-Math activities.

Projects and collaborations

Capacity-building projects

Mathematics Capacity Building in Rwanda

A capacity-building project at the University of Rwanda supporting the development of mathematics activities, including work connected with mathematics education and outreach.

Funder: International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS)

Mathematics for Sustainable Development (Math4SDG)

Math4SDG is a NORHED II project strengthening mathematics and mathematics education through collaboration between the University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University and the University of Bergen. It supports PhD training, research collaboration, education and regional activities, including the African–Nordic Mathematics Conference held in Arusha in August 2026.

Funder: Norad, NORHED II

Educational projects

Bergen–Makerere–UDSM mobility and postgraduate collaboration

Collaboration between the University of Bergen, Makerere University and the University of Dar es Salaam supports postgraduate education, student and staff mobility, research visits and research collaboration. The collaboration builds on the universities' wider cooperation in mathematics and mathematics education.

Funders: Erasmus+ and NORSTIP

Data Skills and Industry Readiness Training Program

A long-term training initiative launched by the University of Rwanda Department of Mathematics in June 2026. The programme works with students in Years 2–4 to strengthen data skills and preparation for employment and collaboration with industry.

Makerere–Groningen mobility and research collaboration

An Erasmus+ collaboration between Makerere University and the University of Groningen supporting doctoral mobility and research visits. Activities have included visits by Makerere PhD students to Groningen and research visits from Groningen to Makerere.

Funder: Erasmus+

Waterproof: from Proof Assistant to Educational Tool

Waterproof develops and tests an educational proof assistant designed to help students learn how to write mathematical proofs. The project supports the use of proof-assistant technology in university mathematics education.

Funder: Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO)

Research projects

Applied Mathematics for Earth Observation

A Finland–Rwanda collaboration using applied mathematics and Earth observation to address research questions connected with environmental and societal challenges. The project brings together LUT University, the University of Rwanda and AIMS Rwanda and supports research collaboration and researcher development.

Funder: Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), TFK programme
