Women in Math
Women in Math provides a framework for activities aimed at strengthening the participation and development of women in mathematics across the CoRE-Math network. It connects existing initiatives in areas such as research, networking, mentoring, career development and outreach, while providing a basis for developing new activities across the network.
EANWoBAS
The Eastern Africa Network for Women in Basic Sciences (EANWoBAS) was founded by female mathematicians and physicists from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia and is coordinated from Uganda, with branches in several countries. ISP has supported the network annually since 2019.
EANWoBAS predates CoRE-Math and is an established regional network closely connected with the participating mathematics environments. Its recurring activities include networking and mentoring, workshops, school visits, mathematics and science camps, Run4MATH and other outreach that encourages girls and women to continue in mathematics and the basic sciences.
Activities across the network
Activities supporting women and girls in mathematics also take place at individual CoRE-Math nodes and through associated mathematics organisations and networks. Examples reported during 2023–2025 include:
- Uganda: EANWoBAS and the Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda organise school visits, mentoring, mathematics camps, Run4MATH and other outreach aimed particularly at girls and women in mathematics.
- Tanzania: the University of Dar es Salaam has organised recurring science camps for secondary-school girls combining mathematics and physics, alongside school outreach and support that helps female postgraduate students participate in scientific activities.
- Zambia: activities include mentoring and career talks for female secondary-school students and research and professional-development opportunities for female postgraduate students and early-career researchers in mathematics.
These are selected examples rather than a complete inventory; relevant activities at other CoRE-Math nodes have not yet been collected centrally.
Related networks and initiatives
The following organisations, networks and initiatives are useful connections for this area of work but are not CoRE-Math programmes, projects or formal partners.
Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda (AWoM)
AWoM is a Ugandan organisation supporting women and girls in mathematics through mentoring, outreach, mathematics camps, Run4MATH and other activities. Its links with EANWoBAS and the Ugandan mathematics environment make it particularly relevant to CoRE-Math.
African Women in Algebra
African Women in Algebra is an African research network for women working in algebra and its applications. Its research-oriented activities include workshops, seminars and collaborative research groups.
African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA)
AWMA is a pan-African organisation promoting the participation and development of women in mathematics through networking, mentoring and support for study and research careers.
Women in Sage Africa
Women in Sage Africa (WiS-Africa) is a recurring initiative bringing together African mathematicians, particularly women and early-career researchers, for collaborative research, training in SageMath, networking and mentoring. The workshops aim to develop research collaborations across countries while strengthening the participation and visibility of women in mathematics.
WiS-Africa workshops have been held in:
Senegal (2021) · Nigeria (2022) · Uganda (2023) · Burundi (2024) · Tunisia (2025) · South Africa (2026)
STEM MentHER
STEM MentHER is a South African mentoring initiative supporting female secondary-school learners interested in STEM and connecting them with women in academia and industry. It was founded by mathematician Cerene Rathilal, who is based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
