Prof Lassi Roininen (Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology, Finland) has been awarded a €68,000 grant under the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) TFK programme for the period August 2026 – December 2028. The project will support collaboration between Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology, the University of Rwanda, and AIMS-Rwanda in the topic of Applied Mathematics for Earth Observation. By strengthening links with Rwanda and AIMS, the project is expected to enhance joint research activities and support the development of mathematical expertise addressing societal challenges.

The project Inference for Small Area Estimation through Generative Methods: A Focus on Gender Disparities (SPIRIT) has been awarded CHF 453,270 by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) under the SPIRIT programme. Running from June 2025 for 43 months, the collaboration involves researchers from the University of Geneva and the University of Rwanda. The project aims to develop new statistical inference methods to improve the reliability of Small Area Estimation (SAE), with a particular focus on producing accurate confidence intervals for data used in policymaking.

Focusing on gender disparities in health, employment, and income in Rwanda, the project will apply these methods to real-world challenges and deliver open-source tools for evidence-based decision-making. It also strongly supports capacity building through the involvement of three PhD students from the University of Rwanda, who will benefit from funding, international mobility, and research training, further strengthening Africa–Europe collaboration within the CoRE-Math network.

The Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence in Mathematics (CoRE-Math), with Uppsala University as The Guild Co-lead and Makerere University as the ARUA Co-lead, is offering six to eight fellowships for PhD students, postdocs, and senior researchers to spend up to three months at Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2026. These prestigious fellowships are fully funded by Uppsala University, providing a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge mathematical research. Applications from women researchers are strongly encouraged.
