Schools and young people

CoRE-Math works with schools and young people to stimulate interest in mathematics and encourage further study in mathematics and related disciplines. Activities include school visits, mathematics and science camps, career guidance, mentorship, and opportunities for school students to visit universities and meet mathematicians.

Activities vary between countries and respond to local needs. In Rwanda, mathematicians have visited secondary schools in Kigali and other parts of the country to encourage students to study mathematics. Schools have also been invited to the University of Rwanda to meet university staff and receive career guidance.

In Uganda, mathematics camps, school visits and mentorship activities have been used to develop mathematical interest and talent. Activities have included a Mathematics Camp (MATHCAMP), school mentorship through the Association for Women in Mathematics in Africa (AWoM), and mathematics outreach connected with the International Day of Mathematics. Several activities have placed particular emphasis on encouraging and supporting girls in mathematics.

In Tanzania, the mathematics network has collaborated with other science partners on activities for school students. In 2024, a five-day Female Science Camp brought together about 60 advanced-level girls from seven secondary schools in Dar es Salaam for activities in mathematics and physics aimed at preparing them for university-level study.

These activities complement mathematics competitions by reaching a broader group of young people and showing how mathematics can lead to further study, scientific careers and applications in other fields.
