Diletta Martinelli (University of Amsterdam), Jim Portegies (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Michael Oyengo (Maseno University) are working together on an Institute for Advanced Study fellowship exploring how emerging technologies can support mathematics education and mathematical communities in the Global South.
The project combines work on Waterproof, the STACK online assessment system and generative AI. It will investigate how these technologies can support scalable mathematics teaching and learning, particularly in Sub-Saharan African universities, while also examining broader questions about infrastructure, access, collaboration and inclusion.
A central concern is that new technologies should not simply be transferred from the Global North, but developed, tested and evaluated together with mathematical communities in Africa.
The project will be presented at a fellowship event at the University of Amsterdam on 21 October 2026.
