29 January 2024 · Kampala, Uganda
Makerere University awarded Professor Leif Abrahamsson an Honorary Doctor of Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of mathematics in East Africa, particularly in Uganda.
A former Programme Director of the International Science Programme (ISP) at Uppsala University, Leif Abrahamsson helped initiate the Eastern Africa Universities Mathematics Programme (EAUMP) and coordinated Sida’s bilateral programme at Makerere University. His work supported long-term collaboration between universities in Africa and Europe.
These initiatives contributed to postgraduate education, research capacity and international scientific cooperation in the region. They also helped establish the research environments and collaborative networks on which CoRE-Math continues to build.
The honorary degree was conferred on the first day of Makerere University’s 74th graduation ceremony, on 29 January 2024.
