East Africa mathematics events audit 2024–2025

Updated: 21 October 2026 Scope: Research into historically significant mathematics activities in East Africa for possible inclusion in the CoRE-Math Events collection. This document distinguishes event-level evidence from general references in the ISP annual reports.

Summary

Four verified records have now been added to the Events collection:

The existing Seventh Rwanda Mathematics Competition, provincial second stage already represents a documented 2025 RMC stage. No duplicate RMC record has been created.

Added records

Event Verified date and venue Organisers and institutional connections Sources
Run4Math8 15 March 2025; Tororo Girls’ School sports ground, Tororo, Uganda AWoM and Busitema University; an EANWoBAS-related International Day of Mathematics activity. AWoM; ISP Annual Report 2025.
International Day of Mathematics, Zanzibar 19 March 2025; Mapinduzi Square, Michezani, Zanzibar, Tanzania Mathematics Association of Tanzania. The activity is relevant to the University of Dar es Salaam node, but no CoRE-Math organising role is asserted. The Guardian.
Uganda National Mathematics Contest 5 April–26 July 2025; national centres across Uganda, with the prize ceremony at Makerere University, Kampala Uganda Mathematics Network and Uganda Mathematical Society; a nationwide activity linked to the Mathematics Competitions programme. UMS contest circular; ISP Annual Report 2025.
Second East African Mathematical Olympiad 24 April 2024; Department of Mathematics, University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya East African Mathematical Olympiad network and the University of Nairobi Department of Mathematics; regional Olympiad history associated with the Mathematics Competitions programme. EAMO; contemporaneous organiser announcement; ISP Annual Report 2024.

Continuing research

Event Status Evidence and remaining uncertainty
Rwanda Mathematics Competition (2025) Partially verified / represented in part ISP Annual Report 2025 confirms all district, provincial and national stages. The existing Event record documents the provincial second stage on 21 February. The national final is reported as 7 March in an ISP post, but its venue has not been independently confirmed. Do not add a second record until the record scope is agreed.
Ethiopian National Mathematics Olympiad (2025) Partially verified ISP confirms the Ethiopia mathematics group and Ethiopian Mathematics Professionals’ Association organised the national Olympiad for high-school students. The title and organisers are now established, but dates and venues remain unverified.
Mathematics Camp, Uganda (2025) Partially verified ISP confirms a MATHCAMP focused on talent, confidence and mentorship for girls in mathematics. It gives neither dates nor venue nor a named organising institution.
Rwanda Mathematics Competition (2024) Partially verified ISP Annual Report 2024 confirms district, provincial and national stages in February–March, organised through the Rwanda mathematics network. Exact dates and venues for each stage remain needed.
Second Ethiopian Mathematics Olympiad (2024) Partially verified ISP Annual Report 2024 confirms the activity for high-school students. The report does not establish dates or venue; a dated second-round paper points to December 2023, so no 2024 date is assumed.
International Day of Mathematics, Buddo Junior School (2024) Partially verified ISP Annual Report 2024 identifies the Uganda EANWoBAS node and Buddo Junior School. The date remains uncertain: a nearby report poster names 16 March at Makerere University Freedom Square, which is not demonstrated to be the same activity.
Female Science Camp, Dar es Salaam (2024) Partially verified ISP Annual Report 2024 records a five-day January camp for advanced-level girls from seven schools, organised by Tanzania EANWoBAS with mathematics and physics partners. Exact dates and host institution remain needed.
Run4Math activities, Uganda (2024) Partially verified ISP Annual Report 2024 refers to eighth Run4Math activities at five schools or universities. No dates or venues are supplied. This cannot yet be reconciled with the separately verified Run4Math8 in Tororo in 2025; it may be a reporting/numbering difference rather than the same event.

Zanzibar date clarification

The ISP Annual Report 2025 records an International Day of Mathematics activity in Zanzibar on 14 March 2025, with participation by mathematics-network members. Independent local reporting records the national celebration at Mapinduzi Square on 19 March 2025. The new Event record represents the specifically dated national celebration on 19 March. It does not treat the two references as interchangeable or claim that the 14 March activity was the same event.

Additional 2025 report findings

The report identifies no additional East African mathematics events with enough date-and-venue information for immediate Event records. It does document related outreach, including Tanzania robotics boot camps and AWoM visits to schools, but these lack sufficient core metadata. They should be researched separately if a broader outreach inventory is desired.

Event data structure

No data-structure change is proposed. Every added record has an exact date or date range. The current start_date and optional end_date fields should not be used to simulate an unknown day. Where only a month and year are reliable, retain the activity in this audit until a supported approximate-date representation is deliberately designed and approved.
