SIDA supported projects

The collaboration between Eastern Africa and Nordic Mathematics Departments was significantly boosted by substantial financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) to build capacity in Rwanda (since 2007), Uganda (2010–2022), and Tanzania (since 2015) through MSc, PhD, and postdoc

training, supervision training, summer schools, dissemination of research findings at conferences, publications, workshops on publication strategies, and PhD curriculum development, among other areas. Uppsala University, through ISP, was the overall programme coordinator for the Sida programmes in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda and continues to coordinate in Rwanda and Tanzania. Linköping University (LiU) has been the lead university on the Swedish side in all these projects. Stockholm University (SU) and Uppsala University (UU) hase also been partners. Through the EAUMP programme and Sida bilateral support, the six African partners have fully supported over 60 MSc students, partially supported over 200 MSc students, fully supported over 60 PhD students, and fully supported about 15 postdocs. About 30 PhD students in mathematics and its applications are currently being trained collaboratively with ISP support in all six countries and Sida support in Rwanda and Tanzania. Most PhD and MSc graduates from over 20 years of collaboration are now staff members at partner universities and other Eastern

African universities, with a few transitioning to industry roles.
